Glutathione is the most powerful antioxidant in the human body.  It is also a safe and natural agent that may help restore uneven, sun-damaged or hyper-pigmented skin.

What is glutathione?

Glutathione acts as a powerful antioxidant and cleanses the liver of chemicals, hormones and pollutants.  It is the most powerful antioxidant in the brain, where in low levels it is associated with serious diseases.  Glutathione is made from 3 amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine.  Glutathione is not well absorbed orally with the exception of the s-acetyl-glutathione and liposomal forms.

How does it work?

Your skin’s pigmentation (skin color) occurs because the body produces melanin. Melanin is produced by the melanocytes in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Greater eumelanin production in the body contributes to darker skin whereas pheomelanin production contributes to the production of a red-yellow pigment seen in people with lighter skin tones.

Glutathione inhibits the production of eumelanin and increases the production of pheomelanin, a lighter skin pigment.

How long does it take to see results?

Although results vary based on the treatment prescribed, schedule and avoidance of unprotected sun exposure, you will typically see results within 2-3 months.  There are no limits to the number of treatments.

What are some of the early results that I can expect?

Within a few weeks, you should notice that your skin is healthier looking. If you are prone to acne or other skin conditions, you should notice cleaner more vibrant skin. The process begins from the inside out.  Patients also report an increase in energy and healthier hair.  Results, however, may vary.

Does it work on the face only or will it also work on the body?

The effect will be even and consistent for the face and the entire body. Glutathione may work to inhibit eumelanin throughout the entire body. The process starts from the inside out, that’s the reason why it takes time to be able to see initial change in your skin tone. The process goes from head to foot meaning that you will have an even skin tone throughout your body.

Will my skin tone go back to its original color once I stop using it?

The effects can last a long time, as long as you avoid unprotected sun exposure. Many patients chose to come in for follow-up IVs every 3 months or 6 months. In many cases, we suggest glutathione precursors pills, which help to prolong the treatment results. These pills and the follow-up IVs, however, are not mandatory. We will recommend a maintenance plan once you have achieved your desired results.

Can sun exposure affect results?

Yes. The sun will have a counteractive effect because it increases eumelanin production and darkens skin tone. To ensure you get the most out of these treatments, try to avoid excessive sun exposure or wear high SPF sunscreen (60 or above) when in the sun.

Why is glutathione given via IV (intravenously)?

Glutathione is poorly absorbed orally through pills with the exception of s-acetyl-l-glutathione and liposomal glutathione.  It is best given directly into the blood as an IV (intravenous) drip.  Oral precursors to glutathione can be given to support glutathione levels in the body and as maintenance once desired results are achieved.

Are glutathione injections safe?

Glutathione is a safe, naturally occuring substance, produced by your body’s own cells through dietary consumption.  Glutathione may be beneficial for your health. Glutathione helps eliminate toxins from the body, supports the central nervous system, aids in fertility and supports a healthy and strong immune system.

Are there negative long-term effects?

There are no known side effects or interactions with IV administration of glutathione.

Is the injection painful and how long does it take?

The IV procedure is not commonly painful.  A small gauge catheter is used to minimize pain and discomfort.  The IV will be inserted in a large vein on the inside of your arm.  In general, each treatment takes about 60 minutes.

What else is included in the glutathione IV?

Vitamins, including vitamin C, are added to the IV drip along with minerals and amino acids.  All these nutrients are needed for healthy skin.  The dosage of each ingredient is customized based on your assessment.  He will explain your treatment plan at your first appointment follwing your assessment.
